OUR Story
A HISTORY OF BUD’S
Bud’s started out as Bud’s Hamburger Shop. It was built in 1939 by Bud Deatrick; that’s how Bud’s got its name. Bud Deatrick came from Hillsdale, Michigan to open his second Bud’s restaurant. Mr. Deatrick, sometime in 1941 or 1942, then closed The Hamburger Shop.
In 1942 Glen Hiatt opened Bud’s Hamburger Shop once again. Mr. Hiatt operated Bud’s for the next ten years. Then sold The Hamburger Shop to the first Mayers, Elden & Marilyn, in 1952. Elden & Marilyn owned and operated the restaurant for thirteen years.
In November 1965 Elden sold Bud’s Hamburger Shop to his brother Lowell. Elden & Marilyn then moved to Waterville, Ohio to operate Miller’s Turnpike Restaurant, the first restaurant on Reynold’s Road in Maumee, Ohio.
Lowell & Pat Mayer owned and operated Bud’s for 47 years. Them and their five children worked to bring the very best to their many customers and friends over the years. They also made some of the biggest changes Bud’s would see, including moving the grill from the front window to its present place.
Changing the dining room and the kitchen to meet the needs of a new era of Bud’s meant Bud’s was no longer just a hamburger shop but a place for family & friends to come together to enjoy a piece of pie, coffee, or a meal.
On May 1, 2011 Matthew Mayer, son of Lowell and Pat, purchased Bud’s from his father. Matt and his wife Susan currently own and operate Bud’s.
